Thank you to the Gramps developers for making this great program.

Suggestions

  • Suggest that a "help" icon & possibly "about" icon be added to the toolbar also? ? see this also

  • Suggest that for categories with only one view; that the view should still display an icon on the toolbar (showing the views name) as it would make it easier to explain to users for consistency and screenshots (also some OS's don't display the title bar that shows the views name ) eg [1]

restructure and reorganize user manual

The ?GrampsWikiSupportTeam? is about to restructure and reorganize the user manual documentation for Gramps Desktop. If you are interested in helping, please visit our [? team page?] for information. For using the Gramps wiki, there is a starting place here. There is also a forum discussion about planning the restructure of the user documentation going on.

Privacy button toggle

Make a template for the privacy button toggle, same text all the time! [2] from glossary:

Record is 22x22-gramps-unlock.png public/22x22-gramps-lock.png private Padlock icon toggle defaults to 22x22-gramps-unlock.pngpublic.

Records are shown with
a 22x22-gramps-lock.pnglocked padlock when private; and, an 22x22-gramps-unlock.pngunlocked padlock when public. Clicking the padlock icon toggles between Private & Public flags.
tab data present

Make a template for the many many variations of the same message about "bold font" to show presence of data on tabs! call the template: "tab-data-present"? eg: two different messages for the same thing ( this would be frustrating for translators! )

Tango-Dialog-information.png
Interface Tip

There is a visible indicator for each tab in editor windows to alert when there is underlying data to explore. This can relieve the compulsion to visit empty tabs for simple confirmation.

The tab label font styling reflects the existence of corresponding information: if the tab contains any data, the tab label will be in boldface and be preceded by an icon; if the tab has no data, then the label appears in regular (plain, not bold) typeface lacking the icon.

The tab labels reflect the presence of corresponding information:

if the tab contains any data, its label appears boldface; if the tab has no data then its label appears regular (not bold).

Tango-Dialog-information.png
If a tab label is in boldface type, this means it contains data.

If not, it has no data.

Interface Indicator Tip

If a tab label has an icon and is in boldface type, this indicates that the tab contains data. If not, it has no data.

This saves having to flip through empty tabs in sequence. It also helps when skimming for missing data.

Undo history warning window

Repeated quite often all over the website change to template?

Undo history

Proceeding with this tool will erase the undo history for this session. In particular, you will not be able to revert the changes made by this tool or any changes made prior to it. If you think you may want to revert running this tool, please stop here and backup your database.

Stuff for later

  • Dashboard de duplication request "Gioto these two section could be combined?"[3]

  • rename page https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Animal_pedigree to make it clearer that it is related to translation. and see if you can use weblate to replicate this by assigining a custom ISO code as mentioned in Reserved and user-assigned code elements, ISO 3166-1 - From Wikipedia ( also check if french page "Pedigree animal" is really the translated name of the page? )
  • Macedonian has two user manual "Getting Started" pages which one is correct?
Gramps icons for user manual
  • unversioned icons keep as is for now and move to individual templates later
collapsible sections example

See https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Comparison_of_genealogy_software for collapsible sections example

index automation

Create a feature request and upload the finished script. see

Stuff I've created

Language shortcuts GrampsAIO

  • 13204 Gramps AIO64 5.2 Language icons Shortcuts Pack table below (Download zip file attached to take screenshots in different languages)

How to start Gramps AIO windows in existing user manual languages

User manual Screenshots

Notes for screenshots (when using #Language_shortcuts_GrampsAIO)

  • Language selector - add back to other reports and need to link to an example of this on that calendar holidays page highlighted in yellow
  • links for non English user manuals don't always work because of translated title and redirection! use <span ID="Graphs"></span> wrapped around the relevant section title.

automate Gramps to show the what needs to be screenshot-ed

Have outline of a rudimentary script that manipulates and resizes the main Gramps window only via the gramps ini file, but have not quite worked out how to switch between categories and then take screenshot and restart Gramps in other languages and take same screenshot. (on-hold for now)

automate the screenshot process

  • See stack-overflow question: Automatically taking screenshots of program window that mentions: "We have a software manual with a number of screenshots. When new version of software is released we need to update most of screenshots and we have to do it manually. Now we started translating manual to several languages and number of screenshots to take have increased ten fold. We'd like to automate this process."

automate the bulk screenshot upload to mediawiki process

Sam888 says ok via email, will help if needed, thank you :)

User manual PDF generation

Once the screenshot automation is done on github, automatically run the following on github also

To do

  • Gramps Performance see GEDFAN to create large test trees?
    • Gramps Performance Testing - Doug Blank 2025/08/14 - To that end, I’ve started a new project that will live outside of gramps core that will measure the timing of various database functions. (It should live outside of gramps because the versions of the testing will be independent of the version of gramps).

Stuff for user manual

See WIP above.

  • Mediawiki build a page from other pages content
  • Mediawiki Help: Use mediawiki subpages to organise information.
  • https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Devhelp Devhelp is a Gtk+/Gnome browser for API documentation; it works natively with gtk-doc (which is the API reference format for Gtk+/Gnome documentation). (Look at using this for Gramps user manual? ) Devhelp works natively with GTK-Doc, so the GTK and GNOME libraries are well supported. But other development platforms can be supported as well, as long as the API documentation is available in HTML and a *.devhelp2 index file is generated.

Adapt WebSearch's help tab

2025/10/03 Trialed Adapting WebSearch's help tab to show user manual section with a single image.

  • Gramps-Web: Talk to your tree! DavidMStraub - I implemented a new AI chat feature in Gramps Web but it took me a while to sort out a few outstanding things and write documentation, now I can finally start advertising it. Gramps Web will soon be the first open source genealogy system with an AI assistant!
