The auto-expand for print concern might be addressed with a change to the print.css stylesheet.

Finding a Gramps Glossary term to link may be easier than choosing the best introductory section in the wiki.
I am tracking down documentation on that possibility in the MediaWiki support pages.

  <small>&#91;&#91;Gramps_Glossary#active_person|Active Person]]
 +
  &#91;&#91;Gramps_Glossary#P|Primary Object]]</small>
 +
Glossary terms (like Active Person above) are normally lowercase and use an underscore between words. They have a brief description and may already have the introductory text and practical tutorial linked. You can fall back to the Letter index (like using 'P' with Primary Object above) if you don't know the exact entry.

Download not working
Since most of these How do I... tutorials are likely to have been prompted by a MailList discussion, a set of example 'See also' link are included for reference.
Hi On the PseudonymTree.gramps when I attempt to download gz File:GrampsPseudonymTree(02Feb2020).gz I only get an empty file and checking the wiki filesystem only shows a zero-byte file? Please upload a new version or send to me, or possibly convert it to a "zip" file for the windows users?  Also, a lot of what you have done in this file should be added/merged to the example.gramps which has the same purpose and is included with each release of Gramps, eg raise a feature request to merge the two files?<br />

Sam888 (talk) 02:29, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

<hr />

That's odd as the .gz file lists & downloads as 9kb on my phone & PC. I did something unusual for the hotlinks. (Maybe that is why you're seeing a zero byte file if you choose Download while right-clicking the link?) The links forward to the file management wiki page instead of being a download link for the file itself. (It took a bit of searching to discover how to correctly override the linking of the image too!)

Please note that the gzip (GNU zip) format is native to the .gpkg & .Gramps formats as written during backup in Gramps. Using the ZIP format would make it incompatible with Gramps.
+
Pointing the maillist archived thread link to the original message that inspired the tutorial give proper credit for the idea &amp; reveals the background discussion.

Finally, I see the example.gramps and this file as being at cross-purposes & not suitable for merging.
+
Pointing another link to a good search phrase for the archive allows similar discussions to be explored.

Example.gramps contains records VALID for actual genealogical use & real-world testing. (Since it is also used for unresolved bug reports & automated testing, changing this now 'standardized' Reference File might invalidate those key processes. Mods to the example.gramps probably ought to pass through a new 'standards' verification & approval.)
+
----

The Pseudo tree is specifically incompatible with real-world use. It is an abstraction model.<br />
+
Once the tutorial Preview is satisfactory, save a revision of the document. Then clean out the virtual Copy&amp;Paste clipboard cluttering up your tutorial and save a final revision.

Rollback on user manual
I'm rolling back several edits you made to the past user manual and the current user manual to nonexistent categories. I'll protect the older non-English user manuals from change. Please only edit the current user manual and if you notice that the old user manual can be edited, drop me a note, please. <br />

Sam888 (talk) 02:48, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

I'm sorry to see those rollbacks. The categories were already in use for other pages in those languages. These changes merely consolidated all (except 4 admin locked pages) non-English pages falling into the 'Documentation' category. It harmonized them into the subcategory listings for each language. This still left the obsolete manual pages cluttering the category but we've been discussing options for addressing that. (There is value in keeping the old versions on the wiki. Offloading them would break the 'Help' in legacy versions of Gramps. Also, some of the old documentation illustrates changes in approach & gives timeline context to evolving features.) Will follow-up in email.<br />
+
To remove the virtual Copy&amp;Paste clipboard, simply delete everything from the beginning of this section to the bottom of the document. It is all disposable.

This an unnecessary redirect category page.
+
If the Copy&amp;Paste clipboard is needed again, simply paste the following line at the end of the Edit box, Save a revision, &amp; edit again.(Previewing isn't enough... a revision must be saved.)
This an unnecessary redirect category page.

Other wiki Templates can be used as virtual Copy&amp;Paste clipboards in the same way.

The category "How do I" is an unreferenced category for "How do I..."

Can we clean out unused categories to eliminate clutter in the Category index?

I was attempting to use the Query Gramplet but could not find as it is Unstable and not listed in the addon list. I ended up attempting to manually install it from the link on the :5.1_Addons page, should a note be added to its page about this? Haven't tested yet but did manage to install and take a screenshot. Wonder why it is not listed for download?  <br />

🚧 Work In Progress

This wikipage is a cloned outline from a template. It is a VERY temporary placeholder in my personal discussion area.

Since you are reading this paragraph, then the I have not progressed to the point of trimming out the excess template material. That means the wikipage is certainly not ready for collaborative editing yet. Multiple people editing now might unintentionally overwrite their work. Contact me via the Discourse discussion forum while this page exists as a 'Discussion' page.

Needed a REDIRECT from the English titled Finish "fi" page to the "FI" prefixed Finish page, then you need to edit the Finish page at least once for the language template to update and show "suomi", clear as mud! Daleathan (talk) 00:26, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

First binary for Apple Mac

The fist binary [*.DMG] was released by Emrys Williams for Gramps 3.1.2 back in 2009

see the following messages:

 • https://sourceforge.net/p/gramps/mailman/message/11259440/ [Gramps-devel] GTK+ native on MAC OS X / From: Richard Taylor <rjt-g...@th...> - 2005-11-24 08:55:09 / "This should mean that a MAC native pygtk should be possible and hopefully enough of the pygnome stuff to enable GRAMPS in native MAC OS cocoa form."
 • https://sourceforge.net/p/gramps/mailman/message/22433558/ [Gramps-users] Who uses gramps on Apple Mac? / From: Emrys Williams <emrys...@ev...> - 2009-05-16 08:23:38 / "I'm contemplating trying to organise better support for gramps on mac, somehow or another. I'd like to know how many people are currently using gramps on mac and how they get on."
 • https://sourceforge.net/p/gramps/mailman/message/22816867/ [Gramps-devel] gramps on mac / From: Emrys Williams <emrys...@ev...> - 2009-06-20 21:26:46 / "Much to my surprise, I now have a gramps built with jhbuild running on Mac!....so I wrote a jhbuild moduleset to build python 2.6.2, and that magically made everything spring to life using the 3.1.2 gramps....So I have some bugs to investigate and some more organisation of the build to do, then I can think about bundling the whole lot up as a one-click-install Mac package. But it does actually work!"

Before that Gramps could be installed using Macports ( https://sourceforge.net/p/gramps/mailman/message/18932404/ indicates person was using Gramps 2.2.10 ) from about 2006 and even before that Apple users could use something called FINK for version 1.0.10 of GRAMPS!
