Special WikiContributor copyright diligence template

Responded via email to the idea of using this template for the user manual. TLDR not in the current form needs to expand on printing automatically.

Sam888 (talk) 02:17, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

The auto-expand for print concern might be addressed with a change to the print.css stylesheet. I am tracking down documentation on that possibility in the MediaWiki support pages.

Download not working

Hi On the PseudonymTree.gramps when I attempt to download gz File:GrampsPseudonymTree(02Feb2020).gz I only get an empty file and checking the wiki filesystem only shows a zero-byte file? Please upload a new version or send to me, or possibly convert it to a "zip" file for the windows users? Also, a lot of what you have done in this file should be added/merged to the example.gramps which has the same purpose and is included with each release of Gramps, eg raise a feature request to merge the two files?
Sam888 (talk) 02:29, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

That's odd as the .gz file lists & downloads as 9kb on my phone & PC. I did something unusual for the hotlinks. (Maybe that is why you're seeing a zero byte file if you choose Download while right-clicking the link?) The links forward to the file management wiki page instead of being a download link for the file itself. (It took a bit of searching to discover how to correctly override the linking of the image too!)

Please note that the gzip (GNU zip) format is native to the .gpkg & .Gramps formats as written during backup in Gramps. Using the ZIP format would make it incompatible with Gramps.

Finally, I see the example.gramps and this file as being at cross-purposes & not suitable for merging.

Example.gramps contains records VALID for actual genealogical use & real-world testing. (Since it is also used for unresolved bug reports & automated testing, changing this now 'standardized' Reference File might invalidate those key processes. Mods to the example.gramps probably ought to pass through a new 'standards' verification & approval.)

The Pseudo tree is specifically incompatible with real-world use. It is an abstraction model.

Rollback on user manual

I'm rolling back several edits you made to the past user manual and the current user manual to nonexistent categories. I'll protect the older non-English user manuals from change. Please only edit the current user manual and if you notice that the old user manual can be edited, drop me a note, please.
Sam888 (talk) 02:48, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

I'm sorry to see those rollbacks. The categories were already in use for other pages in those languages. These changes merely consolidated all (except 4 admin locked pages) non-English pages falling into the 'Documentation' category. It harmonized them into the subcategory listings for each language. This still left the obsolete manual pages cluttering the category but we've been discussing options for addressing that. (There is value in keeping the old versions on the wiki. Offloading them would break the 'Help' in legacy versions of Gramps. Also, some of the old documentation illustrates changes in approach & gives timeline context to evolving features.) Will follow-up in email.

This an unnecessary redirect category page.

This an unnecessary redirect category page.

The category "How do I" is an unreferenced category for "How do I..."

Can we clean out unused categories to eliminate clutter in the Category index?

https://m.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:CleanupEmptyCategories.php

According to "What links here" only one page does for the Czech(cs) language and I've changed that page to use the proper page. The answer is yes to cleaning up, but please use the "What links here" link to determine that and make sure the linked pages point to the correct page etc.. Thanks for your edits Cheers

QueryGramplet

I was attempting to use the Query Gramplet but could not find as it is Unstable and not listed in the addon list. I ended up attempting to manually install it from the link on the 5.1_Addons page, should a note be added to its page about this? Haven't tested yet but did manage to install and take a screenshot. Wonder why it is not listed for download?
GulliblePangolin (talk) 22:14, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

That's a good point. A 'Warn' would probably be appropriate. This Gramplet pre-dates the switchover to SQLite and there's been a resurgence in interest.
Getting some more users (and bug reports) might lead to the Gramplet becoming more stable & useful.

Bamaustin (talk) 22:18, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Added the warning. Tried a query and get the following error:
2020-04-22 08:28:43.253: WARNING: _manager.py: line 308: Plugin error (from 'QueryQuickview'): No module named 'gramps.gen.lib.handle'
QuickView Error: plugin does not load
So it needs to be updated for gramps 5.1.x is my guess I'll see if any issues have been raised?

GulliblePangolin (talk) 22:31, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Reported as 11671 but a bit of sleuthing in the bug tracker shows that this gramplet has been abandoned by the original developer called Doug Blank, and was delisted by another developer.

Extract Place Data from a Place Title

Can you help?

I was attempting to clarify what exactly "place title" is when it says " extract city, state/province and zip code information from a place title. " eg: extract from where?

Also it has a Notes section that seems random and not integrated with the rest of the article?

GulliblePangolin (talk) 22:33, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

I believe this tool was probably created to parse imported data. And the source program transferred a Place without an ID or structured Hierarchy... just a chunk of variable format text. It might even be from a vCard instead of another genealogy program.

We'll probably have to look at the code and hope they included comments about what deficiency inspired them to build the tool.

It is an early enough tool that it was built by Don. The code indicates that there was a Place format change ... from a collated comma separated field into a distinct hierarchy form.

Image links on Download page

Sorry reverted your last change as removing the link now causes people to visit the images page instead of keeping them in the section. Ok I believe I understand what you are referencing, you can paste the name of the image file to the end of the url string to get to its page eg https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/File:Windows_180x160.png Your usage on the keybindings page makes sense you would not need a section link. GulliblePangolin (talk) 22:13, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Partially reverted your edit on FAQ

Seems you accidentally removed the new sections added today for the FAQ Gramplet. GulliblePangolin (talk) 14:04, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

what's not included in an export

Hi, I've added a section for What's not included when exported that is duplicated on three pages(import should mention it also!) and should probably be its own section in an appendix entry for advanced stuff ? always more stuff to do! --Sam888 (talk) 04:37, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Good deal. Converted them to templates. Figured that will help is keep the data in sync while the section evolves. We can subst the templates... if we get to that point.
