Yes, there are a number of way to determine the relationship between two Persons in the Tree.

You can make them the Active Person & then use the Relationship calculator.  This tool is interesting because it lists the relationship conversationally. That is, it says something like "Smith, John is the great grand uncle of Weaver, Susan. Their common ancestors are Smith, Mark and Carpenter, Mary."

However, the Relationship Calculator is also overwhelming because it lumps all the Relatives of the Active Person into an alphabetical list. So, you'll have to find a Person by name instead moving through a pedigree Tree. If the Tree is too big to keep a Pedigree snapshot in your head, you're in for some navigation awkwardness pain. You'll have to cross-reference the people you find in the Views while navigating the Tree in the List of the Relationship Calculator.

You may find it is more natural to assume your conversational subject will revolve around one person. You can put Gramps on the same conversational footing.

This is typically done by designating one Person as the Home Person and navigating the Active Person selection to the others as they pop up in discussion.

Normally, you will have set yourself as the Home Person. But while having a conversation with someone, you will want to temporarily swap Gramps to reporting from THEIR perspective by designating THEM as Home Person. (I have a Bookmark for myself to make it easier to 'find myself' & reset the Home designation back to normal.)

Sometimes, the subject of the conversation will be an ancestor you're mutually researching. So they would become the temporary Home Person.

Designating the Home Person:

Once you have set the Home Person, several options can show the Active Person's relationship to the Home Person:

The Status Bar:

ln the display tab of the Preferences, you can change the Status bar from the default of displaying thr 'Active person's name and ID' to 'Relationship to home person'.

Relation to Home Person quick view.

(I haven't used this Quick View and the wiki section is a 'stub')

The Deep Connections Gramplet show indirect relationships but can be confusing for direct cousins... because the listing stops at siblings. It will not list the mutual ancestor(s). Most people want to know the shared ancestor and if you're descended from the same marriage.)

It's not hard to do it visually on a full family tree (ie one that shows

ALL the people, not just descendant and ancestors), but difficult when

the size of the tree is very large.

Paste the raw Tutorials outline for the How Do I... article above the See also section. This might start with pasting in a copy of a useful thread from one of the Gramps maillists.

Saving this file as a 'work in progress' will insert the code behind this reference template. (Preview only show the results, not the markup formatting control.) You can use the appended special formatting example template to pre-populate a virtual Copy&Paste clipboard. Snip pieces to paste special formatting to enhance the outline.

Since most of these tutorial are likely to be inspired by a MailList discussion, a set of example 'See also' link are included for reference.

Adding a 1st link pointing to the introduction of the interface element in the wiki will relive you of the burden explaining how to find the feature.

Pointing the 2nd link to the original message that inspired the tutorial give proper credit for the idea & reveals the background discussion.

Pointing the third link to a good search phrase for the archive allows similar discussions to be explored.

Once the tutorial Preview is satisfactory, save a revision of the document. Then clean out the virtual Copy&Paste clipboard cluttering up your tutorial and save a final revision.

To remove the virtual Copy&Paste clipboard, simply delete everything from the beginning of this section to the bottom of the document. It is all disposable.

If the Copy&Paste clipboard is needed again, simply paste the following line at the end of the Edit box, Save a revision, & edit again.(Previewing isn't enough... a revision must be saved.)
