How to create image reference regions.

Reference regions

Image reference regions can be used to select or highlight portions of images. It is relatively easy to establish reference regions by following these steps:

Editing an image in the Gallery tab
  • By whichever method is easiest, access the database object/record where the image is used. Typically, this would be a person, place, event, or citation/source.
  • Go to the gallery tab for that record. Edit an existing image, or add a new one.

Image selection into Gramps 4.1
Media Reference Editor
  • Once you are in the Media Reference Editor, there are several methods for selecting reference regions:
    1. The edit fields can be changed manually to select a region. Regions are selected as a percentage of the image. 0%, 0%, 100%, 100%, means a region covers the entire image.
    2. The spinbuttons can be used in a manner similar to the entryfields, to select a region as a percentage of the image.
    3. In Gramps 3.1.0 and newer, you can click-and-drag in the Preview pane to select a region. Every time you click-and-drag, a smaller region can be selected. If you CTRL +click the Preview pane, the region reverts back to 0%, 0%, 100%, 100%.

Creating a new reference region
  • Once you have a reference region defined, click OK into the Editor, and repeat these steps as necessary for all other people in the image.

Narrative Web

Narrative Web gallery example

Starting with Gramps 3.1.0, image reference regions are also displayed in the Narrative Web HTML pages created with Gramps. There are no special options necessary in Narrative Web for this feature, other than the existence of reference regions for 1 or more images. Narrative Web displays reference regions for people and place objects only.
