==Gnome and KDE==
You can use both, but GRAMPS fits in better with GNOME. For KDE there are some minor issues due to some (GTK) issues outside of GRAMPS. Check the [[KDE page]] to know what these problems might be.

GRAMPS 2.0 requires python 2.3 and the gnome-python and pygtk2 packages. The gnome-python module should be 2.6.0 or greater. The pygtk package should be version 2.5.0 or greater.

Also librsvg2-common is needed. This is a common error at the moment in some packages. Without this library, the icons are not shown.

===Dealing with earlier versions===

If you have an older version of the Gramps source code installed you need to make a decision what you want to do with it before installing a later version. If you wish to keep the old version, make sure that you read the instructions in the INSTALL file regarding the use of the --prefix option to specify where the new version gets installed.

Should you just want to do a straightforward replacement instead, make sure that you remove the older version before you install the new version. Do not install over the top of the old version. As new versions of Gramps are developed, some functionality is occasionally rewritten in different ways. If you install over the top of an existing installation you run the risk that the old code left behind from the old version may be used instead of the new, sometimes with unintended consequences. If you installed from source, the best way of removing the old version is to run<code>
make uninstall</code>

as root from where you installed the version from. Use your distribution's package manager to uninstall if your old version was installed as a package.

===Installing from source code on Linux===

GRAMPS provides a script that can be used to prepare the code for building. This script automatically calls the standard configure script:<code>
./autogen.sh </code> as user

This script will report any missing dependencies. Install these (see also INSTALL file). Building from source code typically requires that the development versions of the required libraries be installed. You might consider setting a prefix path with autogen.sh, see the INSTALL file for instructions. Standard install is in /usr/local.

Once a successful run of autogen.sh has been completed, you can run the typical make procedure. <code>

===Installing from source code on BSD===

Installing on BSD is as straithforward as on linux, apart from some minor issues like tools having different names. See the [[BSD page]] for details.

===Installing from source code on Mac OS X===

===Installing from source code on Windows===

Fortunately for users of Microsoft Windows, some users have made a [[Windows installer]]. So far there have not been any reports of serious differences between the official builds of GRAMPS and the Windows Installer, so the future looks promising. But please, use this at your own risk. The developers of GRAMPS provide the space for this install page, but are not responsible for it.

If the dependencies are in place, the development version can be tested by getting the source (see above), renaming the file const.py.in to const.py, and executing "python gramps.py" from within the src directory. Of course, this is a development version on an unsupported platform, so warnings apply even more to this case than when using the installer. (I have not managed to get a localized build working this way.)

===Installing from source code on Solaris===

Version 3.0.1 has been successfully installed from source on both Solaris 10 (SPARC) and OpenSolaris X86 (2008.05). Please see the [[Solaris page]] for step-by-step details.

Kun avaat tietokannan (joko olemassa oleva tai uusi), avautuu seuraavanlainen ikkuna:

GRAMPS:in pääikkuna sisältää seuraavat elementit:

*Valikkopalkki: Valikkopalkki sijaitseen ylimmäisenä ikkunassa (heti ikkunan otsikon alapuolella) ja tarjoaa pääsyn kaikkiin GRAMPS:in ominaisuuksiin.

Jokaisessa näkymässä on osuus kaikesta tiedosta, valitun ryhmän mukaisesti. Tämä selviää kun selaamme alla luetellut erilaiset näkymät.

*Gramplet näkymä: Näyttää erilaiset Gramplet:it, pieniä sovelmia jotka auttavat sukututkimuksessa.

Ennenkuin käymme läpi erilaiset näkymät, selitetään ensin miten vaihdetaan näkymien välillä.

Kuten aiemmin mainittu, on olemassa kymmenen erilaista näkymää. Lisäksi näkymillä on kaksi erilaista tilaa. Tunnistat vilkaisulla kummassako näkymätilassa olet. Jos näet kuvakkeet listattuna pystysuuntaisesti sivupalkissa ikkunan vasemmassa reunassa, olet sivupalkillisssa näkymätilassa.

Jos sen sijaan näet "lehtiön välilehdet" (nimettynä Gramplets, Henkilöt, Suhteet, Perheet, Sukupuu, Tapahtumat, Lähteet, Paikat, Media, Arkistot ja Lisätiedot) jotka menevät vaakasuuntaisesti ikkunan halki, niin olet välilehdellsessä näkymätilassa. Henkilöt näkymä näyttää henkilöt jotka on tallennettu tietokantaan. Huomaat että henkilöt on ryhmitelty heidän sukunimen mukaisesti. Jokaisen sukunimen vasemmalla puolella on nuoli tai vastaava merkki. Napauttamalla sitä kerran näytetään kaikki henkilöt joilla on tämä sukunimi. Uudelleen napautettaessa pienennetään listaa ja näytetään vain sukunimi.

Oletuksena henkilöt näkymässä näytetään tiettyjen sarakkeiden tiedot kaikista henkilöistä. Voit lisätä tai poistaa sarakkeita näytöltä '''Sarakemuokkaimella''' ( ''' Muokkaa -> Sarakemuokkain ''') ja lisäämällä tai poistamalla merkintä listalta. Voit myös vaihtaa sarakkeiden järjestystä vetämällä ja pudottamalla uuteen paikkaan sarakemuokkaimessa. Kun olet tehnyt muutokset jotka halusit napauta '''OK''' poistuaksesi muokkaimesta ja huomaat muutokset Henkilöt näkymässä.

Suodattimet

Sukututkimus tietokannat voivat sisältää tietoja monista henkilöistä, perheistä, paikoista ja kohteista. Siten on mahdollista että näkymät sisältävät pitkän listan tietoa ja sen kanssa on vaikea työskennellä. GRAMPS tarjoaa kaksi erilaista tapaa tällaisiin tilanteisiin rajoittamaan listaa paremmin hallittavaan kokoon. Nämä kaksi tapaa ovat haku ja suodatus. Haussa haetaan tekstiä näytössä olevalta listalta kun taas suodatin näyttää henkilöt joiden tiedot sopivat suodattimen ehdoille.

Haku on yksinkertainen mutta nopea tapa hakea näytöllä olevilta sarakkeilta. Syöttämällä merkit Haku kenttää ja napauttamalla Etsi nappia näytetään vain ne rivit joissa teksti esiintyy.

Vaihtoehtoisesti voit ottaa käyttöön suodinsivupalkin, joka on näytön oikeassa reunassa. Kun suodinsivupalkki on näkyvillä ei hakupalkkia näytetä. Suodinsivupalkki mahdollistaa vuorovaikutteisen suodatussääntöjen teon jotka voidaan ottaa näytöllä käyttöön. Suodatin on käytäntö perusteinen säännöille ja tiedoille, ei ruudulla näkyvälle tiedolle.

Kun GRAMPS avaa tietokannan, ei ole suodatusta. Esimerkiksi Henkilöt näkymässä oletuksena kaikki henkilöt tietokannasta näytetään.

== Suhteet näkymä ==

Suhteet näkymä näyttää kaikki aktiivisen henkilön (valittu henkilö) suhteet. Tarkemmin, se näyttää hänen vanhemmat, sisarukset, puolisot ja lapset.

Suhteet näkymä on suunniteltu nopeaan liikumiseen. Voit nopeasti vaihtaa aktiivista henkilöä yksinkertaisesti napauttamalla kenen tahansa sivulla olevan henkilön nimeä. Jokainen nimi on itseasiassa hyperteksti linkki, samanlainen kuin www-sivuilla.

Suhteet näkymässä näytetään seuraavat kohdat:

*Aktiivinen henkilö: Ylinpänä näytöllä on aktiivisen henkilön nimi, tunnus, syntymä- ja kuolintiedot. Jos henkilöstä on valokuva se näytetään tietojen oikealla puolella. Seuraavana henkilön nimestä on sukupuolen kertova symboli ja muokkaa painike. Napauttamalla '''Muokkaa''' painiketta voit muokata henkilön kaikkia yksilöllisiä tietoja '''Henkilön muokkaus''' ikkunassa.

*Vanhemmat: Tässä vanhemmat osiossa näytettään perhe jossa henkilön on lapsena. Koska on mahdollista, että henkilöllä on useammat vanhemmat, voi henkilöllä olla useampi vanhemmat osio.

Voit muuttaa Näytä valikosta miten paljon tietoa näytettään. Näytä valikosta voit valita näytetäänkö lisätiedot (syntymä- ja kuolintiedot) ja näytetäänkö sisarukset. Seuraavana henkilön nimestä on sukupuolen kertova symboli ja {{man button|Muokkaa}} painike, josta voit muokata henkilön kaikkia yksilöllisiä tietoja.

Ylempi näyttää henkilön isän ja alempi äidin. Yhtenäinen viiva kuvaa syntymäsuhdetta kun taas katkoviiva kuvaa ei-syntymäsuhdetta kuten adoptiota, lapsipuolia, holhoajaa jne.

Aktiivisen henkilön vasemmalla puolella on nuoli vasemmalle. Jos aktiivisella henkilöllä on lapsia, napauttamalla tätä painikeetta näytetään lista lapsista. Valitsemalla yksi lapsista tulee hänestä aktiivinen henkilö.

Lapsen nimen ulkonäkö valikossa erottaa päättyvän ja jatkuvan sukuhaaran.

Lapsi jolla itsellä on lapsia näyteään valikossa lihavoituna ja kursivoituna, kun taas lapsi jolla ei ole lapsia näytetään tavanomaisilla merkeillä. Jos aktiivinen henkilö on ainoa lapsi, ei valikkoa näytetä (koska se on ainoa vaihtoehto) ja lapsesta tulee aktiivinen henkilö kun nuolipainiketta napsautettaessa.

Ikkunan oikeassa reunassa näytetään kaksi nuolta oikealle. Kun ylempää painiketta napsautetaan aktiivisen henkilön isästä tulee aktiivinen henkilö. Kun alempaa painiketta napsautetaan tulee aktiivisen henkilön äidistä aktiivinen henkilö.

== Miksi käytää GRAMPS:ia? ==

Useimmat sukututkimusohjelmat mahdollistavat sinun syötää tietoja esivanhemistasi ja lapsistasi. Tyyppillisesti ne näyttävät perhesuhteet taulukoina, kaavioina ja raporteina. ===Obtaining the source===

* The lastest stable version of GRAMPS can be downloaded from the [http://sourceforge.net/projects/gramps GRAMPS SourceForge page]. As of this writing, this is gramps-3.0.1.tar.gz. Extract this file into a directory: <code>
tar xzvf gramps-zzz.tar.gz
</code> and then go into this directory:<code>

* If you are interested in testing out the very latest development versions of GRAMPS, they can be obtained from SVN, see [[Brief introduction to SVN]]. The SVN versions of GRAMPS are potentially very dangerous as they have not been extensively tested - especially the "trunk" version which contains features that may still be partly implemented. Be aware that they may be prone to crashing and cause extensive data loss. Please use with extreme caution - and only ever on a copy of your data!

Please, now is the time to read the [http://gramps.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gramps/trunk/INSTALL?view=markup INSTALL] and [http://gramps.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gramps/trunk/README?view=markup README] files accompanying the code. They come with the most recent information.

===Dealing with earlier versions===

If you have an older version of the Gramps source code installed you need to make a decision what you want to do with it before installing a later version. If you wish to keep the old version, make sure that you read the instructions in the INSTALL file regarding the use of the --prefix option to specify where the new version gets installed.

Should you just want to do a straightforward replacement instead, make sure that you remove the older version before you install the new version. Do not install over the top of the old version. As new versions of Gramps are developed, some functionality is occasionally rewritten in different ways. If you install over the top of an existing installation you run the risk that the old code left behind from the old version may be used instead of the new, sometimes with unintended consequences. If you installed from source, the best way of removing the old version is to run<code>
make uninstall</code>

as root from where you installed the version from. Use your distribution's package manager to uninstall if your old version was installed as a package.

===Installing from source code on Linux===

GRAMPS provides a script that can be used to prepare the code for building. This script automatically calls the standard configure script:<code>
./autogen.sh </code> as user

This script will report any missing dependencies. Install these (see also INSTALL file). Building from source code typically requires that the development versions of the required libraries be installed. You might consider setting a prefix path with autogen.sh, see the INSTALL file for instructions. Standard install is in /usr/local.

Once a successful run of autogen.sh has been completed, you can run the typical make procedure. <code>
make (as user)</code>

then <code>
make install (as root) </code>

===Installing from source code on BSD===

Installing on BSD is as straithforward as on linux, apart from some minor issues like tools having different names. See the [[BSD page]] for details.

===Installing from source code on Mac OS X===
Version 3.0.1 has been successfully installed via fink, see: [[Mac OS X fink local]]

Some users have successfully installed GRAMPS on Mac OS X. See the [[Mac OS X]] page for details. Please, add to the wiki if you successfully installed GRAMPS on OS X.

===Installing from source code on Windows===

Fortunately for users of Microsoft Windows, some users have made a [[Windows installer]]. So far there have not been any reports of serious differences between the official builds of GRAMPS and the Windows Installer, so the future looks promising. But please, use this at your own risk. The developers of GRAMPS provide the space for this install page, but are not responsible for it.

If the dependencies are in place, the development version can be tested by getting the source (see above), renaming the file const.py.in to const.py, and executing "python gramps.py" from within the src directory. Of course, this is a development version on an unsupported platform, so warnings apply even more to this case than when using the installer. (I have not managed to get a localized build working this way.)

===Installing from source code on Solaris===

Version 3.0.1 has been successfully installed from source on both Solaris 10 (SPARC) and OpenSolaris X86 (2008.05). Please see the [[Solaris page]] for step-by-step details.

==GRAMPS on handhelds==
GRAMPS can run fine on some small-factor devices. Users have been successfull in using GRAMPS on:
